The Lower School | Grades 6-8

Our Lower School curriculum offers a timeless, rigorous, and enriching approach to middle-school education. Rooted in the classical tradition, this curriculum emphasizes the development of critical thinking, literacy, and a deep understanding of history, language, and culture. Children are introduced to the Trivium—Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric—fostering a strong foundation in reading, writing, and speaking. Through storytelling, hands-on learning, and an exploration of classical texts, students engage with subjects like math, science, history, and the arts in a way that cultivates both intellectual curiosity and moral character. With a modern emphasis on science, technology, current events, and field-studies our “classically modern” approach nurtures a lifelong love of learning, encouraging students to think clearly, reason logically, and communicate effectively.

The Lyceum Program

A cornerstone of all full-time student experiences, our Lyceum program sets us apart. Designed to offer personalized academic support and enrichment by pairing students one-on-one with the school director, through this tailored approach, students receive focused tutoring in areas of need, as well as the opportunity for special study and intellectual enrichment. Whether working on specific subjects, exploring advanced topics, or deepening their understanding of the classics, students benefit from the director’s guidance, mentorship, and individualized attention. This one-on-one setting fosters a strong student-teacher relationship, encourages intellectual curiosity, and allows students to move at their own pace, ensuring they reach their fullest potential. Ideal for learners seeking an extra layer of academic challenge, personalized assistance, or a deeper exploration of their interests, Lyceum provides the space and expertise for students to thrive both academically and personally.

Our Process

When school begins in the Fall, each student at TSS is assigned a weekly Lyceum time. Times are coordinated by the school director as not to interfere with the student’s other classes or important group studies. Twice a year, the student’s Lyceum slot serves as an easy way to coordinate term-end meetings with families to review academic performance in all courses.
